Karun Nair, one of the two Indian batsmen to score a triple century in Test cricket, has made a remarkable comeback after being away from the game for over six months. His state team, Karnataka, had even moved on without him. However, his return to domestic cricket with Vidarbha has brought Nair back into brilliant form, and his exceptional performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy have caught the eye of the national selectors, especially during India’s transitional phase.
Emotional Twitter Post by Karun Nair
In December 2022, Karun posted an emotional message on X (formerly Twitter): “Dear Cricket, give me another chance.” At that time, it seemed like India’s cricket ecosystem had forgotten him. For most of the 2022-23 season, Karun spent his time doing basic drills and throwdowns. But in January 2025, Karun became one of the most talked-about players. His consistent fourth century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and a total of five centuries helped Vidarbha reach the semi-finals.
Impressive Form and Contributions
Nair’s recent form includes an unbeaten 122 runs and a 200-run partnership with Dhruv Shori, helping Vidarbha defeat Rajasthan by 9 wickets. Reflecting on his difficult times, Karun shared that when he was away from cricket, he would travel three hours daily for net sessions as he was not selected for any format. “I had to move forward and work on myself. It wasn’t easy, but I worked hard to give myself another chance,” Karun said.
Training and Dedication
His incredible comeback began at Just Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where he spent hours batting with his coach Vijay Madyalkar. Once Karun got the opportunity with Vidarbha, he gave his all. In the 2023-24 Ranji season, Karun scored 690 runs, followed by strong performances for Northamptonshire. His century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy has particularly drawn the selectors’ attention, especially with senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struggling in Test cricket. Karun’s ability against spin and his overall performance have made him a key player for the selectors.
Potential Comeback in England Tour
Karun’s potential return to India’s squad for the 2024 England tour could be a spectacular moment. After being dropped following the 2018 Oval Test, Karun’s consistent form could bring him back into the Test team, proving that persistence and hard work can pave the way for a second chance at the highest level.
