A new controversy has emerged ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy. This prestigious tournament is scheduled to be held in Pakistan and the UAE in February-March. According to media reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opposed having Pakistan’s name on the Indian team’s jersey.
A source from the BCCI has suggested that the International Cricket Council (ICC) may accept India’s request on this matter.
The source mentioned, “The ICC has already accepted India’s request to not have Champions Trophy matches in Pakistan, so this is a small issue.” This information came through the Times of India.
Controversy Over Pakistan’s Name
According to ICC regulations, all teams must display the name of the host country on their jersey, even if the match is held at a neutral venue. However, India has opposed this rule.
Will Rohit Sharma skip Pakistan?
Reports suggest that Indian captain Rohit Sharma will not participate in the captain’s conference and photoshoot that will be held in Pakistan. These events are traditionally organized before the tournament. The BCCI has requested ICC to move these events to Dubai so that the Indian team does not have to visit Pakistan.
PCB’s Strong Protest
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has strongly criticized BCCI’s stance and accused it of bringing politics into cricket. A PCB official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “BCCI is bringing politics into the game, which goes against the spirit of cricket. They are refusing to visit Pakistan, and now they don’t want the host country’s name on their jersey. This is against the spirit of the game.”
However, according to senior editor Usman Samiuddin of ESPNCricinfo, the PCB has refused to issue an official statement on the controversy.
Violation of ICC Rules?
According to ICC rules, all teams must display the host country’s name on their jersey. If India refuses to comply, it may be considered a violation of the ICC’s clothing regulations.
This controversy has once again fueled the debate between sports and politics. It remains to be seen what action ICC will take in this matter.
