India’s leading fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, is at risk of missing the group stage matches of the Champions Trophy. Bumrah has swelling in his back, due to which he has been sent to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore, where his recovery will be closely monitored.
The Champions Trophy, starting from February 19, will feature the top eight ODI teams in the world, including India. Due to Bumrah’s injury, the selectors are currently deciding whether to keep him in the main team or include him in the reserve players’ list. However, Bumrah is expected to fully recover by the first week of March.
According to sources, Bumrah’s back does not have a fracture, but swelling, for which he will need to undergo rehabilitation at NCA for three weeks. Even after that, he will need to play one or two practice matches to check his match fitness.
India’s first match in the Champions Trophy is against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by a match against Pakistan on February 23. India’s last group match will be against New Zealand on March 2, but it is unclear if Bumrah will be fully fit by then.
Bumrah has had a history of back injuries and made his comeback after being away from cricket for nearly 11 months between 2022 and 2023. Now, India’s team management is paying special attention to his workload to avoid further injuries and ensure he performs at his best in the upcoming competitions.
This situation is a cause of concern for the Indian team, but every possible step is being taken to monitor Bumrah’s recovery and facilitate his return.
